CLIFTONVILLE VOICES
SYNAGOGUE
"I remember
cakes, knishes, and strudels."
"It was absolutely packed;
a really good atmosphere."
"All of the Jewish community from here, they’re really proud to be part of it"
"All the Bar Mitzvahs
and weddings"
"There were a lot of different clans;
the Rubacks, the Hosers,
the Standers, the Kleins,
and the Graduses."
"I’m pleased I came from a family where there was a focal point.
That building was the focal point."
"He held the community together for years, really."
"The space - I love the stairs, the ark,
the ceremony of opening it, and the scrolls.
I like the shape of the building."
"The synagogue was so busy,
and on the Saturdays,
the cars would be end to end."
"You had your seats with their names on them"
"We all had our
Cheder classes,
like Hebrew classes,
once a week on Sunday morning"
"I knew it was just something you had to do. People pinched your face, but you got some nice cake!" [laughs]
"You need to learn to read Hebrew to follow a service, but I have to say
not many people really knew
what they were saying;
they could just follow it."
"When Landau died, it got taken over by some other people.
Services became proper Orthodox,
and it just
changed the atmosphere."
"Bit by bit,
everyone moved away.
There wasn’t a new community, and the old one was just dying."
